Photo: Bangladesh may lose up to one-fifth of its surface area if the sea level rises by one metreJOHANNESBURG, 29 September 2008 (IRIN) - The October issue of the Forced Migration Review (FMR), a journal published three times a year by Oxford University's Refugee Studies Centre, is a 38-article buffet on climate change and displacement, a hot topic according to Jean-Francois Durieux, a lecturer at the centre.

The environmental and migration disciplines have been wrangling over the real numbers of people fleeing natural disasters as the impact of climate change intensifies; how to define a person displaced by environmental factors; what kind of protection can be afforded to such persons; whether those affected should be relocated; whether they should rather be helped to adapt to their changed environment, among various other issues.

"Generally speaking, the former, who tend to isolate environmental factors as a major driving force of migration, can be described as 'alarmists' and the latter, who tend to insist on the complexity of the migration process, as 'sceptics'.

Latest Through the Grapevine

A good Riesling can be the perfect ending to a meal, the perfect accompaniment to a seafood dish, or the perfect accent to a pork dinner.

So we've reviewed a couple of red wines now and I figured it was time to suggest a native white to tickle the palettes of those who prefer the paler shades of the grape....

There are some things that should never be done on the cheap; national security for instance...as well as the war in Iraq, the lack of body armor for our soldiers...bad decision.

Known to France and most of the world as Syrah, the Australians put their own down-under twist on a long established and favored French varietal.

Hurrah for syrah, a forgiving grape

Grown in France's Northern Rhone Valley, it makes an august, powerful wine that tastes of black plums, licorice, spice and black pepper and has a powerful opulence that improves when aged 10 years or more.

Grown in warm, sunny Australia, where they call it shiraz, the same grape can be jammy and soft, tasting of strawberries and cinnamon, and can be drunk the day you buy it.

In a perfect world, I would hunt down a wild boar, stud it with garlic, roast it on a spit and serve it with a plate of potatoes cooked in the coals and a glass of syrah.

News - World: France faces fresh storm alert

The French Atlantic coast was expected to be worst hit, with gales and heavy rain there predicted to reach 140km an hour, but the entire west and north was in the storm's path, weather forecasters said.

The national weather service put 58 of France's 100 departments on a state of orange alert, one step below the top red alert status.

But the forecasters said the storm would not reach the intensity of the one that lashed France on January 14, leaving 11 dead, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands and causing more than a €billion worth of damage.

News - World: France condemns Madagascar bloodshed

Paris "urges, once again, all sides to unite so as to reject the violence" in favour of a "peaceful dialogue and finding the path to national reconciliation," the ministry said.

On Saturday, presidential security forces opened fire on protesters who tried to march on President Marc Ravalomanana's office after a rally in the capital Antananarivo.

The latest deaths brought to 96 the number of people killed in protests that erupted January 26 when the now-sacked Antannarivo mayor Andry Rajoelina called for anti-government demonstrations.
